The Jefferson County Genealogical Society is very interested in providing information to the descendants of former Jefferson County residents. With this thought in mind, we are willing to do "Look-Ups" in published works of Jefferson County in exchange for consideration for donations to provide for the continued operation of the Society. We're a small organization, so be tolerant in allowing for research in conjunction with other activities. We don't expect our volunteers to make special trips, but allow them to schedule with other Society business.
For some insight of the resources available for searching, see the list of publications that are available for purchase. We have most of these books at home, so does not require a trip to the library.
The Jefferson County Genealogical Society has issued a magazine (titled YESTERYEARS) 2 times per year (April & October) for its members from 1980 to the present. It has contained a large amount of history and genealogical information. A Subject Index has been prepared for the contents and can be found on this website.
The Society has files of about 60,000 obituaries and 3 four-drawer file cabinets full of "family" records. The Society also owns microfilm copies of all the Jefferson County newspapers. The obituary card files, family files, newspaper microfilm and published family genealogies are only available at the Genealogical Society Library at Oskaloosa. We can provide guidance regarding use of these resources.
The Library is open to visitors on Saturday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm. on a year-round basis. In addition during the summer from May through September, we are also open on Sunday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be a volunteer at the library to assist you with any research.
